Indications

Approved Uses

Oral contraception (prevention of pregnancy).

Dosage & Administration

Dosing by Condition

Contraception: 1 tablet orally once daily for 21 days, then 7 days tablet-free; repeat each cycle.

Initial Dose

One tablet daily starting on Day 1 of the menstrual cycle (first day of menstruation) for immediate contraceptive protection, or on Day 2-5 with additional barrier contraception for the first 7 days

Maintenance Dose

One tablet daily for 21 days followed by 7 tablet-free days

Maximum Dose

1 tablet orally once daily (desogestrel 150 µg/ethinylestradiol 30 µg).

Children's Dosage

Not approved for use before menarche. Not applicable in prepubertal children.

How to Take

Take 1 tablet orally once daily at about the same time each day, following the order on the blister, for 21 consecutive days, then have a 7‑day tablet‑free interval and start the next pack on day 8 (same weekday); swallow with water if needed.

Safety & Warnings

Warnings & Precautions

Major warnings/precautions: increased risk of venous and arterial thromboembolism (higher with additional risk factors); cigarette smoking markedly increases cardiovascular risk (especially >35 years); monitor blood pressure and stop if significant hypertension develops; stop before major surgery/prolonged immobilization; reduced efficacy with enzyme-inducing drugs-use backup contraception; does not protect against HIV/STIs.

Not applicable. Marvelon is indicated for women of reproductive age. Not used in postmenopausal women.

Pharmacology

Mechanism of Action

Suppresses ovulation by inhibiting gonadotropins (FSH/LH), thickens cervical mucus, and induces endometrial changes that reduce the likelihood of fertilization/implantation.

Onset of Action

If started on day 1 of menses: immediate contraceptive protection. If started at any other time when reasonably certain not pregnant: contraceptive protection is established after 7 consecutive days of active tablets; use backup contraception for the first 7 days.
