Indications

Approved Uses

Symptomatic treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional gastrointestinal (bowel) disorders associated with intestinal spasm (e.g., abdominal pain/cramps, spastic colon).

Off-Label Uses

Not well established; sometimes used symptomatically for other GI spasm-related functional pain (e.g., nonspecific abdominal cramping), but robust guideline-supported off-label indications are limited.

Dosage & Administration

Dosing by Condition

IBS/functional bowel spasm: 135 mg tablet orally three times daily, preferably ~20 minutes before meals; (for modified-release products) 200 mg capsule twice daily.

Initial Dose

One 135mg tablet three times a day.

Maintenance Dose

One 135mg tablet three times a day. Dosage may be gradually reduced after several weeks if the desired effect is obtained.

Maximum Dose

405mg per day (for 135mg tablets).

How to Take

Swallow the tablet whole with water, about 20 minutes before a meal. Do not chew the tablet.
