Indications

Approved Uses

Relief and prevention of bronchospasm in reversible obstructive airway disease (e.g., bronchial asthma) and other conditions with bronchospasm such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema/COPD.

Off-Label Uses

Tocolysis (delaying preterm labor) is an off-label/region-dependent use, typically with parenteral terbutaline; other proposed uses (e.g., hyperkalemia) are not standard and are not routinely recommended.

Dosage & Administration

Dosing by Condition

Oral terbutaline dosing is individualized by age/weight and local label; typical references use adults 2.5-5 mg orally three times daily (max often 15 mg/day) and pediatrics weight-based dosing (e.g., ~0.075 mg/kg/dose three times daily with per-dose maximums per label).

Initial Dose

Adults: 2.5-5 mg three times daily. Children (12-15 years): 2.5 mg three times daily.

Maintenance Dose

Maximum Dose

How to Take

Oral use: shake well before each dose; measure with a calibrated oral syringe/medicine spoon (not a household spoon); may be taken with or without food; take exactly as prescribed.

Missed Dose

Stopping the Medicine

Overdose
