Pharmacology
Mechanism of Action
Ocular lubricant: polyethylene glycol 400 and propylene glycol supplement and stabilize the tear film and reduce ocular surface friction; the formulation also uses a demulcent delivery system (e.g., HP-Guar/borate) to increase retention time on the eye.
Onset of Action
Immediate (within seconds to minutes).
Duration of Effect
Variable; typically provides relief for minutes to a few hours and may require reapplication as needed.
Half-Life
Not applicable; no clinically relevant systemic half-life due to negligible systemic absorption (residence is local on the tear film/ocular surface).
Bioavailability
Not applicable; primarily local ocular effect with negligible systemic absorption (systemic bioavailability expected to be minimal).
Metabolism
Not applicable clinically; acts locally with negligible systemic absorption.
Excretion
Not applicable clinically; any small swallowed/nasolacrimal-drained amounts would be handled by normal systemic pathways, but systemic exposure is negligible.
Protein Binding
Not applicable; no clinically relevant systemic absorption.
