Indications

Approved Uses

Temporary relief of ocular redness/conjunctival congestion due to minor eye irritation (e.g., irritants/allergens) as an ocular decongestant.

Dosage & Administration

Dosing by Condition

Ocular redness/conjunctival congestion: instill 1-2 drops in the affected eye(s) up to 4 times daily (e.g., every 3-4 hours as needed) for short-term use only; avoid continuous use beyond 3-4 days unless directed by a clinician.

Initial Dose

1-2 drops in the affected eye(s).

Maintenance Dose

1-2 drops in the affected eye(s) every 3-4 hours as needed, not to exceed 72 hours of use without consulting a doctor.

Maximum Dose

1-2 drops in the affected eye(s) up to 4 times daily (approximately every 3-4 hours); do not use for more than 3-4 consecutive days unless directed by a clinician.

Children's Dosage

Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric patients. Use in children, especially infants, may result in CNS depression and marked reduction in body temperature.

Dose Adjustment Notes

No formal dose adjustment is established for ophthalmic use; use cautiously in patients with hypertension/cardiovascular disease, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, and in narrow-angle glaucoma, and minimize systemic absorption with nasolacrimal occlusion.

How to Take

Wash hands. Tilt head back and pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket. Instill 1 drop (may use 1-2 drops if directed) into the affected eye(s) without touching the dropper tip to the eye/skin/surfaces. Close the eye gently and perform nasolacrimal occlusion (press inner corner near the nose) for 1-2 minutes to reduce systemic absorption. If using other eye medicines, separate by 5-10 minutes. Remove contact lenses before use and reinsert after 15 minutes (or avoid lenses if the product contains preservatives/if eyes are irritated).

MAO inhibitors (including within 14 days) and tricyclic antidepressants/other antidepressants with strong noradrenergic activity (e.g., maprotiline) may potentiate pressor/sympathomimetic effects; additive effects may occur with other sympathomimetics.

Interaction Severity

MAJOR: MAO inhibitors (and within ~14 days of use) due to risk of marked pressor response/hypertension. MODERATE: Tricyclic antidepressants and other agents that potentiate sympathomimetics (e.g., maprotiline) may enhance pressor effects; use caution with other sympathomimetics. Overdose

If ocular overdose: irrigate/flush the eye with water or saline; if swallowed or excessive systemic exposure (more likely in children): urgent medical attention-possible CNS depression (drowsiness), hypothermia, bradycardia, hypotension or hypertension, and weakness; management is supportive with cardiovascular/respiratory monitoring.

Patient Counseling

Use for short-term relief only (generally ≤3-4 days) to avoid rebound redness. Remove contact lenses before use and wait ~15 minutes before reinserting (or avoid lenses if eyes are irritated). Do not touch the dropper tip; keep bottle capped. Perform nasolacrimal occlusion for 1-2 minutes.
