Dosage & Administration

Dosing by Condition

For corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses (including atopic dermatitis and psoriasis): apply a thin layer to affected areas once daily; reassess if not improved within ~2 weeks and avoid prolonged continuous use.

Maximum Dose

Apply a thin layer once daily; reassess if no improvement within ~2 weeks; avoid prolonged use on the face/intertriginous areas and in children (generally limit to short courses, e.g., ≤5 days on face/children unless specialist-directed).

Dose Adjustment Notes

Use the lowest effective amount for the shortest duration; once control is achieved, reduce frequency or discontinue; if HPA-axis suppression or significant adverse effects occur, withdraw, reduce frequency, or switch to a less potent steroid; use extra caution on face/flexures and avoid occlusion unless directed.

How to Take

Apply a thin layer to the affected skin once daily and rub in gently; wash hands before and after application (unless treating hands); avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes; do not use on the face, groin, or axillae or under occlusion/airtight dressings unless directed by a prescriber; apply to affected areas only.

Application-site burning, stinging/tingling, pruritus, irritation/dryness; folliculitis/furunculosis; with prolonged or extensive use: skin atrophy, striae, telangiectasia.

Hypersensitivity to mometasone furoate or excipients; untreated bacterial/viral/fungal/parasitic skin infections; skin tuberculosis; cutaneous syphilis; post-vaccination skin reactions; rosacea; perioral dermatitis; acne vulgaris.

Storage & Patient Advice

Missed Dose

Apply when remembered; if it is close to the next scheduled application, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule; do not apply extra to make up for a missed dose.

Monitoring Requirements

Monitor clinical response and local adverse effects (atrophy, striae, telangiectasia, irritation, secondary infection); in patients using large amounts, large surface areas, prolonged courses, in children, or under occlusion, periodically assess for HPA-axis suppression and consider growth monitoring in children on long-term/repeated courses.

Pharmacology

Mechanism of Action

Topical glucocorticoid: binds intracellular glucocorticoid receptors, alters gene transcription to suppress inflammatory cytokines and mediators (including via inhibition of phospholipase A2 and reduced prostaglandin/leukotriene production), producing anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive effects.

Metabolism

Rapid, extensive hepatic metabolism (predominantly via CYP3A4) to inactive metabolites.

Approximately 98-99% (systemic protein binding).
