Usage & Dosage
Suggested Use
For children with a low calcium diet, the usual dose is two to six 5 ml spoonfuls per day. For low calcium levels, the usual dose is six to nine 5 ml spoonfuls per day. For newborns, the syrup may be mixed with the first part of the milk feed.
Best Time to Take
With meals
Upper Tolerable Limit
Children 1-8 years: 2500mg/day; Children 9-18 years: 3000mg/day; Adults: 2500mg/day
Absorption Enhancers
Vitamin D enhances intestinal calcium absorption; taking with meals increases absorption; acidic gastric environment improves solubility.
Absorption Inhibitors
High intake of foods containing oxalates (e.g., spinach) and phytates (e.g., whole grains, legumes) can reduce calcium absorption. Should be taken separately from iron and zinc supplements.
Side Effects
Possible Side Effects
Generally well-tolerated at recommended doses. High doses may cause constipation, nausea, abdominal discomfort, hypercalcemia, and hypercalciuria.
Upper Tolerable Limit
Children 1-8 years: 2500mg/day; Children 9-18 years: 3000mg/day; Adults: 2500mg/day
Safety & Warnings
Children Suitability
Suitable for newborns, infants, and children; formulated as a pediatric syrup for use from infancy under medical guidance.
Interactions
Medication Interactions
Reduces absorption of tetracycline and fluoroquinolone antibiotics; interferes with iron and zinc absorption when taken simultaneously; may reduce effectiveness of bisphosphonates; may interact with levothyroxine, digoxin, and thiazide diuretics.
Supplement Interactions
Competes with iron and zinc for absorption - take separately; high calcium intake may reduce magnesium absorption.
Special Populations

Patient Counseling
Shake well before each use. Take orally as directed, preferably with or after meals to reduce gastrointestinal upset. Do not exceed the recommended dose unless advised by a clinician (risk of hypercalcemia). Ensure adequate vitamin D intake/status to support calcium absorption. Separate from medicines whose absorption is reduced by calcium (e.g., tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, bisphosphonates, levothyroxine, and iron) by at least 2-4 hours. Seek medical advice if symptoms of hypercalcemia occur (nausea/vomiting, constipation, polyuria, confusion), or if you have renal impairment or a history of kidney stones. Store below 25°C and keep out of reach of children; if prolonged/high-dose use is needed, monitoring of serum calcium may be appropriate.
