Topical treatment/removal of warts, corns, and calluses (hyperkeratotic lesions).

Dosage & Administration

Dosing by Condition

Warts/corns/calluses: apply a small amount to the lesion only once daily (some regimens allow up to twice daily if tolerated) after soaking and gentle paring; continue until resolution-typically up to 12 weeks for warts, and usually shorter for corns/calluses (often 1-2 weeks, but may require longer depending on thickness/response).

Initial Dose

Apply 1-2 drops to the affected lesion once daily

Maintenance Dose

Apply 1-2 drops once or twice daily to the affected area

How to Take

For external use on warts/corns/calluses only: soak the affected area in warm water for ~5 minutes, dry well, gently pare/rub thickened surface (pumice/emery board), protect surrounding normal skin (e.g., petroleum jelly) if needed, then apply a small amount of solution to the lesion only and allow to dry; repeat once daily or as directed by the prescriber.

Flammable preparation: keep away from heat/open flame and do not smoke during/after application until dry. If significant irritation/chemical burn or signs of infection occur, stop and seek medical advice; improvement may take several weeks with consistent use.

Monitoring Requirements

No routine labs required; monitor for excessive local irritation/chemical burn and stop/seek advice if severe; if used on large areas/under occlusion or in high-risk patients, monitor for symptoms of salicylate toxicity (e.g., tinnitus, dizziness, nausea).

Pharmacology

Mechanism of Action

Salicylic acid is a keratolytic that decreases corneocyte cohesion by solubilizing intercellular cement, promoting desquamation; lactic acid (AHA) also reduces corneocyte cohesion and alters keratinization, enhancing shedding/softening of hyperkeratotic tissue.

Onset of Action

Softening/visible improvement often within 1-2 weeks; complete clearance may take 6-12 weeks for warts (often faster for corns/calluses).

Duration of Effect

Effect is dependent on continued regular application; keratolysis is not sustained after stopping.
