Benefits & Uses

Primary Benefit

Supports bone health, teeth strength, and helps prevent calcium deficiency and osteoporosis

Health Claims

Contributes to normal bone and teeth maintenance; supports normal muscle function; helps reduce the risk of osteoporosis when combined with adequate vitamin D and a healthy diet

Common Deficiency Symptoms

Muscle cramps, numbness and tingling in extremities, brittle nails, dental problems, bone pain, osteopenia, osteoporosis, and in severe cases tetany

Target Population

Postmenopausal women, elderly adults, individuals with low dietary calcium intake, patients on corticosteroids, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and those at risk of osteoporosis

Scientific Evidence Level

Strong

Onset Timeline

Effects on bone density are long-term and typically measured over months to years. It does not provide immediate symptomatic relief for bone conditions.

Usage & Dosage

Suggested Use

Take one tablet with food. Do not take within 1-2 hours of other medications.

Serving Size

1 film-coated tablet

Servings Per Container

50

Best Time to Take

With meals - calcium carbonate requires stomach acid for optimal absorption

Upper Tolerable Limit

2500 mg elemental calcium/day for adults aged 19-50; 2000 mg/day for adults over 50

Absorption Enhancers

Vitamin D is necessary for calcium absorption. Taking with food increases stomach acid, which aids absorption of the carbonate form.

Absorption Inhibitors

Phytic acid (found in whole grains, nuts, seeds, beans) and oxalic acid (in spinach, beet greens, sweet potatoes) can bind to calcium and reduce its absorption. High intake of sodium and caffeine can increase calcium excretion.

Side Effects

Possible Side Effects

Generally well-tolerated at recommended doses. May cause gas, bloating, and constipation. High doses can lead to hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels).

Upper Tolerable Limit

2500 mg elemental calcium/day for adults aged 19-50; 2000 mg/day for adults over 50

Safety & Warnings

Children Suitability

Consult a physician for use in children under 12; dosing requirements differ by age group

Interactions

Medication Interactions

Reduces absorption of tetracycline, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, bisphosphonates, levothyroxine, and iron supplements - take these medications at least 2 hours apart; may reduce effectiveness of calcium channel blockers; thiazide diuretics increase risk of hypercalcemia

Supplement Interactions

Competes with iron and zinc for absorption - take separately; magnesium absorption may be reduced when taken simultaneously in high doses

Special Populations

Target Population

Postmenopausal women, elderly adults, individuals with low dietary calcium intake, patients on corticosteroids, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and those at risk of osteoporosis

Children Suitability

Consult a physician for use in children under 12; dosing requirements differ by age group

Storage & Patient Advice

SFDA Storage Conditions

store below 30°c

Patient Counseling

For CARBOSET (calcium carbonate 600 mg film‑coated tablet, oral): Take with meals/food to improve absorption (calcium carbonate is acid‑dependent). If more than one dose daily is needed, split doses (e.g., ≤500-600 mg elemental calcium per dose) rather than taking all at once. Do not exceed the labeled/recommended daily dose unless advised by a clinician. Separate from interacting medicines: levothyroxine by at least 4 hours; iron, bisphosphonates, and tetracycline/fluoroquinolone antibiotics by at least 2 hours (often 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after for some antibiotics). Maintain adequate vitamin D intake as advised. May cause constipation-ensure adequate fluids/fiber. Seek medical advice if symptoms of hypercalcemia occur (e.g., nausea/vomiting, constipation, polyuria/polydipsia, confusion) or if you have kidney stones/renal impairment.
