Indications

Approved Uses

Relief of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses (e.g., atopic dermatitis/eczema, contact dermatitis [allergic/irritant], seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis, lichen simplex chronicus/neurodermatitis, and insect bite reactions).

Dosage & Administration

Dosing by Condition

Most corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses (e.g., eczema/dermatitis/psoriasis): apply a thin film to affected areas once or twice daily; reassess if not improved within 2-4 weeks and step down/reduce frequency once controlled; avoid extended continuous use on face/flexures and use specialist guidance for psoriasis requiring longer courses or larger areas.

Initial Dose

Maintenance Dose

After initial improvement, reduce frequency of application or change to a less potent preparation. Intermittent dosing (once daily, twice a week) may be considered for recurrent conditions.

Maximum Dose

Storage & Patient Advice

Missed Dose

If used for a prolonged period and/or on large areas/under occlusion, taper by reducing frequency (and/or potency) rather than stopping abruptly to reduce rebound and adrenal suppression risk.

Overdose

Acute topical overdose is unlikely, but chronic excessive use (large areas, prolonged duration, occlusion) can cause local atrophy/striae and systemic effects (HPA-axis suppression/Cushingoid features); management is to stop or taper gradually and treat complications; if swallowed, seek medical advice and provide supportive care.

Pharmacology

Mechanism of Action

A topical glucocorticoid that binds intracellular glucocorticoid receptors to alter gene transcription, inducing lipocortins that inhibit phospholipase A2 and downstream prostaglandin/leukotriene synthesis, producing anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive effects.

Half-Life
