How to Take
Cleanse (wash) and thoroughly dry the affected skin, then apply a thin film to the entire affected area and gently rub/massage in, usually twice daily (morning and evening); wash hands after application; avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes (rinse well with water if contact occurs).

Patient Counseling
Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin over the entire affected area (not spot-only) usually twice daily; wash hands after; avoid eyes/mouth/mucosa and rinse with water if contact occurs; expect mild burning/stinging/dryness early that often improves-reduce to once daily or pause briefly if significant irritation; improvement typically begins around 4 weeks and may take 8-12 weeks for best effect; use moisturizer and daily sunscreen; monitor/report any skin lightening (especially darker skin); store below 30°C.
Monitoring Requirements
No routine laboratory monitoring; monitor clinically for local skin irritation and for hypopigmentation/skin lightening, particularly in patients with darker skin tones.
Pharmacology
Mechanism of Action
Azelaic acid has antimicrobial activity against Cutibacterium (Propionibacterium) acnes, normalizes follicular keratinization (comedolytic/anti-keratinizing effect), and has anti-inflammatory/antioxidant effects (reduces reactive oxygen species).
Onset of Action
Initial improvement is often seen in about 4 weeks, with more maximal benefit typically by 8-12 weeks of consistent use.
Half-Life
Unknown / not well established for topical azelaic acid (no clinically meaningful half-life is provided in standard labeling for the topical product).
Metabolism
Partially metabolized via beta-oxidation to shorter-chain dicarboxylic acids; overall systemic metabolism is limited due to low absorption.
Protein Binding
Unknown / not routinely reported for topical azelaic acid in standard product labeling.
